Creeks

The Bay Area is home to hundreds of creeks that provide habitat to native mammals, birds and plants and that include vital riparian travel corridors used by steelhead to reach their breeding grounds. Creeks also play an important role in diverting water to the Bay during storms and can provide welcoming retreats in the midst of our urbanized landscapes.

  • Learn about the creek closest to you and about local creek restoration projects!
  • Keep plastic out of creeks and BYOBag.  Avoid using plastic bags, polystyrene and other plastics which easily blow into creeks from parking lots and garbage trucks and account for 60 percent of the litter found in local waterways. Learn which local stores provide incentives for bringing your own bag.
  • Keep creeks free of pesticides. Residential pesticide use—especially products used for ant and insect pest control–accounts for most of the pesticide toxicity found in Bay Area creeks. Learn about less toxic pest control strategies that really work (tested by pest control and water quality experts).
