Oil and antifreeze leaks on the ground are washed into storm drains, creeks, and the Bay during rainstorms. Degreasers and soaps — even biodegradable brands — contain chemicals harmful to fish.
Be a good neighbor
- Have your vehicle regularly inspected and maintained at a Clean Bay Auto Shop. Get all leaks repaired promptly.
- If you maintain your vehicle yourself, capture the vehicle fluids and any leaks or spills with other household hazardous wastes.
- Recycle used motor oil, antifreeze, and brake fluid along with other household hazardous wastes.
- Use a commercial car wash. Dirty water from the car wash will be treated before being discharged into the Bay. If you must wash your car at home, wash it on a grassy or dirt surface to keep dirty water from flowing into a gutter or storm drain. Empty your bucket of soapy water into a sink or toilet.
- Give your car a break and stretch your legs. Walk, ride your bike, or use public transportation.
